Cookson Street Camberwell
Location \ Camberwell Melbourne
Client \ City of Booroondara
Budget \ $800K
Duration \ 2016 – 2019
The fundamental aspiration of our team, in response to the Cookson Street Project brief, was to develop a streetscape design that is integrated and responsive to the unique energy and diversity of this precinct, anticipates future development and reinforces Cookson Street as a lively and highly accessible destination.
The streetscape of Cookson Street will create spaces for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists alike, that are safe and inviting, and enable new opportunities in a “shared zone” typology. This will be a place that prioritises pedestrians and creates more space for people.
Cookson Street has a layered history of which many traces remain. Some of the key project objectives included developing a contemporary design that draws upon different aspects of local history and landscape character, for example the luxuriant planting character of the adjacent railway corridor of palms and conifers, the finer grain architectural details and faded signage of the Edwardian shop fronts.
Early 20th periodic garden motifs such as lava rock grotto gardens and decorative seating are reimagined as street edge meeting places.
